It’s with great sadness that as president of the Burnley CYMS Cricket Club I announce the passing of life member and Burnley CYMS Legend Danny Slattery.
We have been informed from a family member of Danny Slattery’s passing that Danny passed away on the 21/01/2024 at the age of 82.
For years Danny was the head of our bowling attack in the clubs’ highest grades. His statistics speak for themselves. From 1976, Danny played 135 games (back when all club cricket was played as 2 day games), and took 300 wickets at an amazing average of 14.75. He won multiple bowling average awards, was a member of the famous 1st XI 76/77 premiership team and received the club’s highest honour of Life Membership in 1982.
Danny’s career actually predates our recorded history and he had many other accomplishments prior to 1976. His time with the club started in the late 1960s and amongst a number of other on field heroics he took a hat-trick in the early 70s.
He played his last game for the Burners before retiring at the end of the 1991/92 season. Then, at the ripe old age of 66, he made a one game comeback for the club in October 2007, and when thrown the ball took one final wicket.
Danny was also a great contributor on the committee and was often down to watch his beloved club until his health started to decline a few years ago. Danny’s partner Sue has also been an amazing contributor to the club by serving on the committee and has been involved in organizing some of the clubs finest social events.
On behalf of all Burnley CYMS members past and present, the club sends its condolences, thoughts and prayers to all members of Danny’s family.
Burnley CYMS will pay tribute this weekend with a minutes silence before the game, and all players will be asked to wear a black armband in respect to Danny Slattery
